Conus tinianus, also known as the variable cone, is a type of sea snail. It's a marine gastropod mollusk that belongs to the Conidae family. This family is famous for its beautiful, cone-shaped shells.
Like all cone snails, Conus tinianus is a predatory animal. This means it hunts other small creatures for food. These snails are also venomous. Their sting can be harmful to humans. Because of this, it's very important to be careful. Never touch a live cone snail with your bare hands.
About the Variable Cone Snail
What Does It Look Like?
The shell of the variable cone snail can be from 20 mm to 60 mm long. That's about the size of a small to medium-sized candy bar. The shell is thin and has fine lines near its bottom.
Its color is usually a reddish-brown, mixed with gray patches. It also has white and brown patterns that look like broken lines. The top part of the shell, called the spire, is gently rounded. The very tip, or apex, often has a pretty pink color.
Where Does It Live?
This marine snail lives in the ocean waters. You can find Conus tinianus off the east coast of South Africa.
