The Convento de las Dueñas is a beautiful old building in the city of Salamanca, Spain. It's a special kind of religious house called a Dominican convent. This convent was built a long time ago, between the 15th and 16th centuries. It's known for its amazing old architecture.

A Look Back: History of the Convento de las Dueñas

The Convento de las Dueñas was started in 1419. It was founded by a woman named Juana Rodriguez Maldonado. She used her own palace to create this new convent.

The main church and the beautiful cloister (a covered walkway around a courtyard) were built later. This happened around the year 1533.

What Does the Convento de las Dueñas Look Like?

The convent still has some of the original gates from the old palace. These gates show a special style called Mudejar. This style mixes Christian and Islamic art.

One of these old gates leads into the cloister. The cloister is very famous for its detailed stone carvings. The top part of the cloister has special decorated pillars called capitals. These capitals are great examples of the Plateresque style. Plateresque is a very fancy Spanish Renaissance style. It looks like silversmith's work because of all the tiny details.
