Cookia sulcata, also known as Cook's turban, is a type of large sea snail. It is a marine gastropod (a kind of snail) and a mollusc. This interesting creature belongs to the Turbinidae family, which are often called turban snails because of their shell shape.
What Does Cook's Turban Look Like?
The shell of Cook's turban can be quite large. It usually measures between 50 mm (about 2 inches) and 90 mm (about 3.5 inches) long. Its shape is like a cone, and it feels rather thin. The edges of the shell are rounded.
The shell has about seven rounded sections, called whorls. These whorls have small, wavy lines and folds. The bottom of the shell is flatter and has circular ridges. The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is oval-shaped and looks shiny and pearly inside.
Cook's turban also has a special "door" called an operculum. This operculum is brownish or white on the inside. It acts like a lid, helping the snail to close off its shell for protection.
Where Does Cook's Turban Live?
This marine snail lives in the ocean waters around New Zealand.
