The Copernicia hospita is a special kind of palm tree. It is found only in Cuba, which means it is native to that country. People sometimes call it the Cuban wax palm.
About the Cuban Wax Palm
This unique palm tree has beautiful, circular leaves that look like big fans. These leaves are a cool blue-gray color and feel waxy. They grow on long, thin stems.
What it Looks Like
Up to 40 of these fan-like leaves spread out to form a perfect circle at the top of the tree's trunk. The trunk itself is smooth and shaped like a column. It can grow quite tall, reaching up to 26 feet (about 7.9 meters) high. The trunk can also be about 1 foot (0.3 meters) wide.
Flowers and Fruits
The Cuban wax palm also has delicate brown flowers. These flowers grow on special branches that are a bit hairy. This type of palm is monoecious, which means each tree has both male and female parts in its flowers. This allows the flowers to produce seeds. After the flowers, the tree grows fruits that look like small, black marbles. Each fruit can be up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) across.
