The Copper Mountain Fire Lookout is a special building built in 1934. It was made to help spot forest fires. This lookout is located in what was once the Glacier Ranger district of the Mount Baker National Forest.

It looks like a small cabin. It has big windows on every side. These windows are protected by special shutters that open like an awning. A roof with lightning rods sits on top. The lookout is about 14 feet (4.3 meters) square.

What is the Copper Mountain Fire Lookout?

The Copper Mountain Fire Lookout is a historic building. It was built to help protect forests. People called "lookouts" would live here. Their job was to watch for smoke. If they saw smoke, it meant there might be a forest fire. They would then report it quickly.

This lookout is one of only three left in North Cascades National Park. These three lookouts were built by the United States Forest Service. The Forest Service is a government group. They manage national forests and grasslands.

A Special Job During Wartime

The lookout had another important job during World War II. In the winter of 1943, it was used by the Aircraft Warning Service. This service was a group of volunteers. They watched the skies for enemy aircraft. This was a very important task to keep the country safe.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its history and importance, the Copper Mountain Fire Lookout is a special place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 10, 1989. This means it is recognized as a significant historical site. It is protected so future generations can learn from it.
