Corey Maclin's Life and Career
Corey Maclin was most famous for being a sports reporter at WMC-TV in Memphis, Tennessee. While there, he also co-hosted the United States Wrestling Association (USWA) with Dave Brown. Later, he became a ring announcer for USWA.
Early Days in Radio
Corey started his broadcasting journey very young, at just 16 years old. He began working at a radio station called 107.1 KFTH-FM (now KXHT), where he hosted a gospel music show on weekends. Even while still in high school, he worked six nights a week in radio. By age 18, he moved to another station, WLOK, and became the youngest program director there. A program director helps decide what music and shows a radio station plays.
Becoming a Wrestling Announcer
When he was 22, Corey joined Dave Brown again, this time to do "color commentary" for USWA Championship Wrestling. Color commentary means explaining the action and adding interesting facts during a sports event, like a wrestling match. He did this for six years until USWA stopped operating in 1997.
Beyond Broadcasting
After leaving WMC-TV, Corey became the advertising director for The Memphis Silver Star News. He then started his own company, Corey Maclin & Associates. This was an advertising agency that helped businesses in and around Memphis with their advertising needs.
In 1999, Corey took charge of the relaunched Memphis Wrestling promotion as its president and CEO. He handled everything from producing the TV shows to managing the wrestlers, marketing, and budgeting. On July 10, 2004, Corey even had his only wrestling match! He teamed up with Kamala against Jerry Lawler and Jimmy Hart. The match ended in a "no contest," meaning there was no clear winner.
Corey Maclin also tried his hand at politics. In 2010, he ran for County Clerk of Shelby County, Tennessee, but he did not win. He later worked at WPTY-TV (now WATN-TV) as an on-site reporter, covering news from different locations.
A Sad Farewell
On May 2, 2013, just two months before his death, Corey left WPTY to focus more on Memphis Wrestling and other opportunities. Sadly, Corey Maclin passed away on July 31, 2013, at the age of 43. He was killed in a car crash in Mississippi. Reports said his car rolled over on Interstate 55.
