This happened in front of about 30,000 people. He was at the Orange Bowl stadium in Miami, Florida. He was trying a difficult motorcycle jump. The accident was recorded on camera.
Corey Scott's Stunt Career
Corey Scott was born in Decatur, Indiana. He became interested in motorcycle stunt riding when he was 15 years old. His father passed away in 1987. That same year, when Corey was 18, he finished high school. He then moved to Florida.
Corey started performing with the Joie Chitwood Chevy Thunder Show. He worked with this group for several years. He performed in over 2,000 shows with them. Corey was very good at certain stunts. He specialized in "wheelies," which is riding a motorcycle on its back wheel. He also did precise driving with motorcycles and cars. Another stunt was the motorcycle-pickup jump. For this, he jumped over a moving truck that had a ramp on its back.
Later, Corey left the Chitwood show. He started his own company called Scott's Super Stunts. In 1995, Corey won a ramp-to-ramp jump competition. This event took place in Charlotte, North Carolina. The competition was even shown on ESPN.
After this, Corey took a break from stunts. He had suffered a head injury. But in 1996, he returned to performing stunts.
A Sad Day: Corey Scott's Last Stunt
On Saturday night, February 8, 1997, Corey Scott was performing. He was at the Orange Bowl stadium in Miami, Florida. This was during a U.S. Hot Rod Monster Jam event. About 30,000 people were watching him.
Corey was trying a very challenging "step-up" jump. He rode his motorcycle up a steep ramp. He was supposed to land into a net that was high in the air. Corey jumped over 70 feet (21 m) high on his motorcycle. He was meant to grab the net when he reached it. However, he missed the net. He bounced off and fell to the ground below. Corey was seriously injured and was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Sadly, he passed away there.
Thousands of people saw the accident. Many in the crowd were filming, so it was caught on camera. Corey had done this exact stunt four times before without any problems. He was 28 years old when he passed away. Many young children were in the audience that night. It was a very sad and difficult event for them to witness.
