Corncob facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A corncob is the tough, central part of an ear of corn. It's like the "stem" or "backbone" where all the corn kernels grow. When you enjoy corn on the cob, you're holding the corncob!

When corn is young, it's sometimes called baby corn. At this stage, you can eat the whole ear, including the soft cob. But as the corn plant gets older, the corncob becomes very hard and woody. Then, only the sweet kernels are edible.

Farmers can either harvest the corncob along with the kernels (like for corn on the cob) or leave it in the field. If left behind, it becomes part of the plant material that helps the soil. The very center of a corncob is white and feels a bit like foam.

What are Corncobs Used For?

Corncobs are useful for many things, even after the kernels are removed! Here are some common uses:

  • Animal Bedding: Farmers often use ground-up corncobs as soft, absorbent bedding for animals like chickens or horses. They soak up moisture and provide a comfy surface.
  • Cat Litter: Just like animal bedding, corncobs can be processed and used to make cat litter. They are good at absorbing smells and liquids.
  • Cleaning Material: When ground into a coarse powder, corncobs can be used as a gentle scrubbing material. They help clean surfaces without causing damage.
  • Smoking Pipes: Some special smoking pipes are made from corncobs. The cobs are shaped and treated to create the bowl of the pipe.

  • Biofuel: Corncobs can be burned to create energy, just like wood. This makes them a type of biofuel, which is energy from plants.
  • Charcoal: You can even turn corncobs into charcoal, which is used for grilling or heating.
  • Rodent Control: A special powder made from corncobs can be used to control rodents in an environmentally friendly way.
  • Soil Helper: In gardens, corncobs can be added to the soil. They help the soil hold water and improve its quality for growing plants.
  • Absorbent Material: Because they soak up liquids so well, corncobs are used to clean up spills or safely get rid of certain liquid wastes.
  • Animal Feed: While not very nutritious on their own, corncobs can be added to animal feed for some livestock, like cows.
