Cornelia, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cornelia is a small, quiet place in Johnson County, Missouri. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it's a group of homes and people living together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. It's located in the southern part of Johnson County, in the state of Missouri, USA.

The community is found along Missouri Route 13. It's about seven miles south of a larger town called Warrensburg and five miles north of another small place called Post Oak. So, it's right in the middle of these two spots!

History of Cornelia

Let's learn about how Cornelia got its start!

How Cornelia Got Its Name

The community of Cornelia was named after a woman named Cornelia Love. She was the wife of one of the very first settlers who came to live in this area. It's pretty cool when places are named after people!

The Old Post Office

A long time ago, in 1855, a post office was opened in Cornelia. This was a very important place where people could send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years, but it eventually closed down in 1904.

Why It Was Also Called "Shanghai"

For a while, Cornelia had another interesting name: "Shanghai." This might sound a bit unusual, but there's a fun reason behind it! Dr. Love, who was important in founding the community, used to raise a special kind of chicken called Shanghai chickens. Because of his famous chickens, people sometimes called the whole community "Shanghai" too!
