Cornelia Druțu is a famous mathematician from Romania. She is known for her important work in a special area of math called geometric group theory. Today, she is a professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford in England. She is also a Fellow at Exeter College, Oxford.

About Cornelia Druțu

Cornelia Druțu was born in a city called Iași in Romania. She went to high school there. She attended the Emil Racoviță High School, which is now known as the National College Emil Racoviță.

Her University Studies

Later, she studied math at the University of Iași. Besides her main classes, she also learned a lot about geometry and topology. These are branches of math that study shapes, spaces, and how things are connected. Her teacher, Professor Liliana Răileanu, gave her extra lessons in these subjects.

In 1996, she earned her Ph.D. (a very high degree in academics) in math. She got this degree from the University of Paris-Sud in France. Her Ph.D. research was about complex math topics, and her advisor was Pierre Pansu.

Her Teaching Career

After getting her Ph.D., Cornelia Druțu started working at the University of Lille 1 in France. She worked there as a "Maître de conférences," which is like a senior lecturer. In 2004, she earned another important degree called a "Habilitation" from the same university. This degree shows that she is qualified to lead research and teach at the highest level.

In 2009, she became a Professor of mathematics at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford. This is a very respected position.

Visiting Other Institutes

Professor Druțu has also visited many other famous math research centers around the world. She spent time at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Germany. She also visited the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in France. In the United States, she worked at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in California.

She was also a Simons Fellow at the Isaac Newton Institute in England. From 2013 to 2020, she led a special group. This group was part of the European Mathematical Society and focused on supporting women mathematicians.

Awards and Recognition

Cornelia Druțu has received several awards for her excellent work in mathematics.

Whitehead Prize

In 2009, she was given the Whitehead Prize by the London Mathematical Society. This award recognized her important contributions to geometric group theory. This area of math uses ideas from geometry to study groups, which are special kinds of mathematical structures.

Simons Visiting Fellowship

In 2017, Professor Druțu received a Simons Visiting Fellowship. This fellowship helps scientists visit other research centers. It allows them to collaborate with other experts and share their knowledge.
