Cornelia MacIntyre Foley was an American painter from Hawaii. She was known for her beautiful paintings, especially those showing Hawaiian women.

Cornelia MacIntyre was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on January 31, 1909. She started learning art at the University of Hawaii. Her first art teacher there was Huc-Mazelet Luquiens.

Her Art Education

Cornelia continued her art studies at the University of Washington. She then spent two years in London, England. There, she attended the Slade School of Art. She learned from a famous teacher named Henry Tonks.

After her time in London, Cornelia came back to Hawaii. From 1934 to 1937, she studied with another artist, Madge Tennent. She later married Lieutenant Paul Foley. He became an important officer in the United States Navy.

Life and Legacy

From 1937 to 1941, Cornelia and Paul lived in Long Beach, California. They also lived in Seattle, Washington, from 1941 to 1942. Cornelia Foley passed away on January 18, 2010. She died in Severna Park, Maryland.

Foley is most famous for her paintings of Hawaiian women. These paintings often show them in a full and graceful way. A well-known example is Hawaiian Woman in White Holoku from 1937.

You can find her major paintings in important art museums. These include the Honolulu Museum of Art in Hawaii. Her work is also at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri.

Cornelia Foley also worked on sculptures. She helped create a concrete outdoor fountain. It is called the Varhey Circle Fountain. This fountain is located on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She made it with Henry H. Rempel.
