Cornelius Holland (regicide) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cornelius Holland (born 1599, died around 1671) was an important figure during a very exciting and challenging time in English history. He was born in London, England, and later died in Lausanne, Switzerland, around 1671. He had to leave England because of his involvement in the trial and execution of Charles I of England, the king at the time.

Holland was known for helping to prepare the accusations against King Charles I. Even though he wasn't there when the king was sentenced to death, and his name isn't on the official document for the execution, he played a big part in the events. In February 1649, he was chosen to be part of the English Council of State, which was like a governing committee, and he was reappointed in the years that followed.

Life at Creslow Manor House

Cornelius Holland lived for some time at a place called Creslow Manor House. He made changes to the house around 1646. This manor house has an interesting history, and it's even mentioned in an old book called Chambers Book of Days.

The pastures around Creslow Manor House used to belong to the King. People called "keepers" were in charge of them. Cornelius Holland became a keeper of these pastures in 1634. He started out as a young boy working for Sir Henry Vane. King Charles I himself appointed Holland to this position.

A Change of Sides

Even though King Charles I gave him a job, Cornelius Holland later supported the Parliament against the King during the English Civil War. Because of his support, Parliament gave him many important and well-paying jobs. He joined the House of Commons in 1642.

Holland became quite wealthy. It's said that he gave one of his daughters a large sum of money, £5,000, when she got married. This amount was worth a lot more back then, like ten times as much today!

After the War

After the King's side lost the war and the monarchy was restored, Cornelius Holland was one of the people who were not forgiven by the new government. To avoid being punished, he fled to Lausanne, Switzerland. He spent the rest of his days there.

It is also said that Holland was responsible for damaging or taking apart several churches near Creslow, including the churches in Creslow, Granborough, and East Claydon.
