The Coronation Hotel is a historic building in South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1891 and is located at 46 Montague Road. This old hotel was designed by a well-known architect named Francis Drummond Greville Stanley.

It was first known as the Montague Hotel. Later, it was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on April 30, 1993. This means it is a special building protected for its history and design.

A Look at the Hotel's Past

The Coronation Hotel was built in 1891. It was designed by Francis Drummond Greville Stanley, a famous architect from Brisbane. When it was first built, it was called the Montague Hotel.

At that time, the hotel was in a busy part of South Brisbane. This area had many shops and homes. George Lotz was the first person to run the hotel. In 1953, its name was changed to the Coronation Hotel. This was done to celebrate the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II.

From the early 1970s, a famous rugby league player named Ripper Doyle ran the hotel. In 1987, a nearby food company bought the hotel. They had plans to build something new there. However, these plans did not happen.

During Expo 88, a big event in Brisbane, the hotel was used as a place for backpackers to stay. It stayed a hostel for some time after that. By 1993, when it was listed as a heritage site, it was empty. Later, it became a music venue called The Joynt for five years. In 2014, it reopened as a cocktail bar called The Milk Factory.

What the Hotel Looks Like

The Coronation Hotel is on a corner of Montague Road. It is a two-story building made of brick. The bricks are covered with a smooth, painted finish. The roof is sloped and made of corrugated iron.

The front of the building has a verandah that sticks out over the street. This verandah has pretty iron lace designs. There is also an awning that covers the street below. The main entrance is at the rounded corner of the building.

On the ground floor, the street-facing walls have flat, decorative columns. These columns have square designs at the top. There are also raised patterns that make the bottom of the building look like a base. Wooden French doors and tall, narrow windows are placed along these walls. The awning over the street is held up by wooden posts. You can still see two of the original fancy cast-iron columns on the Montague Road side.

The first floor also has wooden French doors and tall windows. The balcony on this floor has a cast-iron fence. The columns holding up the balcony are made of metal. They have decorative bases and tops. The roof of the balcony is curved and made of corrugated iron. Above this roof, there is a decorative wall. It has a fancy top edge with small blocks. There is also a triangle shape over the corner and three shaped roof parts with round balls on top.

At the back of the hotel, there is a large two-story brick building. This was likely for services, like laundry. It still has its original wooden verandah. In the backyard, there is a small laundry building with a pointed roof. Next to the service building, there is a newer two-story toilet block.

Inside the hotel, on the ground floor, there are two updated bar areas. There was also a dining room, which is now divided into smaller spaces. The kitchen, storage room, and bathrooms are also on this floor.

A nice wooden staircase leads to the first floor. Here, you will find many bedrooms and bathrooms. Most of the inside of the hotel is still original, except for the bars and bathrooms. The walls are smooth plaster. Above the doors, there are decorative wooden designs. In the bedrooms, the wooden ceilings have metal vents shaped like roses.

Even though the building needs some repairs, it is mostly still the same as it was built. The outside of the hotel is a great example of the architect's skill.
