Coryton House: A Historic Building
Coryton House is a big house built in 1900. It has an Edwardian style, which means it was built during the time King Edward VII ruled Britain (1901-1910). A man named John Cory built it. He owned ships and dry-docks, which are places where ships are repaired. John Cory also started a shipping company called John Cory and Sons.
His son, Sir Herbert Cory, who was a politician, also lived in Coryton House. The gardens around the house were made bigger between World War I and World War II. These gardens are now listed as a special historic place in Wales. This means they are important and protected.
After Sir Herbert died in 1933, Coryton House became a headquarters for civil defence in Cardiff. This means it was a central place for planning how to protect people during emergencies. Later, some parts of the garden were used for offices, and a hotel was built on the old kitchen gardens. Today, Coryton House is called Ty Coryton. It is a special school that helps children who have autism.
