Joaquín Rodríguez, known as Costillares.

Joaquín Rodríguez (born July 20, 1743 – died January 27, 1800) was a famous Spanish bullfighter. He was better known by his nickname, Costillares. Many people consider him the "father" of modern bullfighting, especially the kind people watch in big arenas today.

Biography

Costillares was born in Seville, a city in Spain. His father, Luis Rodríguez, was also a bullfighter and worked in a slaughterhouse. Joaquín followed in his father's footsteps, learning both jobs. Working at the slaughterhouse helped him understand the anatomy of a bull. This knowledge was very useful when he became a bullfighter.

He started his career with another bullfighter named Pedro Palomo. Costillares quickly became well-known in Seville. He was one of the first bullfighters to perform with great success at the new Real Maestranza bullring.

In 1767, Costillares made his debut in Madrid, the capital of Spain. There, he started a famous rivalry with another popular bullfighter named Pedro Romero. Costillares performed regularly in Madrid between 1780 and 1790. He even survived a serious injury during a fight in 1782. He passed away in Madrid when he was 56 years old.
