A Family of Bullfighters
Pedro Romero was born into a family deeply involved in bullfighting. His grandfather, Francisco Romero, was known for improving the way the muleta was used. The muleta is a small red cape used by bullfighters. Pedro's father and two brothers were also toreros, which is another name for bullfighters.
Early Career and Success
Pedro started bullfighting when he was young. In 1772, he took part in bullfights in Algeciras and Seville. By 1775, he was fighting in Madrid alongside his father. The next year, he became very famous. He killed 285 bulls, which really showed how skilled he was.
It is said that Pedro Romero fought 5,558 bulls during his career. He did this without ever getting a serious injury. He retired from bullfighting in 1799.
A New Style of Bullfighting
Pedro Romero was known for changing bullfighting. He was the first matador (the main bullfighter) to show it as an art form. Before him, it was mostly seen as a brave display. He brought grace and style to the arena.
Teaching the Next Generation
After he retired, Romero became the head of a bullfighting school. This school was in Seville. It operated from 1830 to 1832. Even though it was open for only a short time, it had a huge impact. Romero shared his vast knowledge with new bullfighters.
He is often given credit for creating the classical style of bullfighting. This style is known as the School of Ronda. Pedro Romero's name is closely connected to the Plaza de Toros (bullring) in Ronda.
Final Fights
Pedro Romero even fought bulls when he was 80 years old. He killed many bulls in a bullring in Madrid at that age. This was likely his very last corrida, which is a bullfight.
