The Cote Apartment House is a special old building in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. It was built in 1914. This building is a great example of Victorian architecture. It shows how French Canadian immigrants built homes in the town. The Cote Apartment House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. This means it's an important historical place.

What Makes the Cote Apartment House Special?

The Cote Apartment House is located on the east side of St. Johnsbury. It's part of a small group of homes. These homes are built close together on Elm Street. The Cote Apartment House is the northernmost building in this cluster. These buildings are arranged around a shared open space. This space is now called Cote Court. You can see the building from Elm Street across a small lawn.

What Does the Cote Apartment House Look Like?

This building is three stories tall. It is made of wood. It has a flat roof. The outside is covered with clapboard siding. The most noticeable parts are its two-story porches. These porches run along the front of the building. They also go along most of the western side. This side faces the courtyard.

The porches have round posts. These posts have decorative brackets at the top. The railings have square balusters. The main roof has an extended edge. This edge is decorated with simple, carved wooden brackets. The building has three separate apartments inside. Each apartment still has its original wooden details and other features.

Who Lived Here? A Look at Its History

The Elm Street area was already developed by 1875. But it became much more crowded in the early 1900s. Single-family houses were changed into apartments. Some were even torn down to make room for new apartment buildings.

The Cote Apartment House was built in 1912. It was built by Marcelle and Marie Cote. They were French Canadian immigrants. This building was one of three built by members of the Cote family. The way these buildings were arranged around a courtyard was common for immigrants. It provided living space for large families. You can find similar arrangements in other parts of the town.

The Cote family sold the building to the Giroux family in 1921. Later, in 1985, a local housing group bought it. This group worked to fix up and restore the building.
