The Cote House is a historic building located on Goshen Center Road in Goshen, New Hampshire. It was built around 1846 and has a very interesting history. Originally, it served as a schoolhouse for the community. Today, it is a private home. The Cote House is special because it is one of several unique plank-frame houses in Goshen. In 1985, this house was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its importance.
Discovering the Cote House
The Cote House is found on the north side of Goshen Center Road. It is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of New Hampshire Route 31. This house is a one-and-a-half story building. It has a pointed roof, called a gabled roof. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards, known as clapboards.
How the Cote House Was Built
The house is not very big, measuring about 24 feet (7.3 meters) by 22 feet (6.7 meters). Its walls are built in a special way. They use thick wooden planks, about 3 inches (7.6 cm) thick, standing straight up. To make these planks strong and stable, wooden pegs or dowels are placed horizontally through them. Each side of the house has two openings, called bays. Most of these bays have windows. The main door is on one of the shorter, gable ends of the house.
From School to Home
The Cote House was constructed around 1846. It was built by John Chambers, a local builder. He was known for using the unique plank-framing method. For many years, the building served as the Goshen Center Schoolhouse. Children in the area came here to learn until 1926. After that, it became a private home. The Cote House is one of only three schoolhouses from the 1800s that still exist in Goshen. Originally, there were five such schoolhouses in the town.
