Cottbus is a small, quiet place in southern Howell County, Missouri, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes or buildings that doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county's rules.

You can find Cottbus south of West Plains. It's located on County Road 8470, nestled between two state roads: State Route 17 and State Route PP.

A Glimpse into the Past: Cottbus's History

Cottbus has been around for a long time! It was first settled sometime before the year 1883. Imagine what life was like back then, without all the technology we have today.

How Cottbus Got Its Name

The community got its unique name from a doctor named Charles T. Ludwig. He was the very first postmaster in Cottbus. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office, where people send and receive letters and packages. Dr. Ludwig decided to name the community after his own hometown, which was also called Cottbus. That original Cottbus is a city in Brandenburg, Germany.

The Post Office Era

A post office officially opened in Cottbus in 1880. This was a really important place for the community. It helped people stay connected by mail, sending news and messages to friends and family far away. The post office served the area for many years, but it eventually closed down in 1914.
