Charlotte Flandrina: A Life of Faith

Her Early Life and Choices

Charlotte Flandrina's mother passed away in 1582 when Charlotte was very young. After this, her French grandfather wanted her to live with him.

Even though her father's family did not agree, Charlotte Flandrina was raised to become a Catholic nun. A nun is a woman who dedicates her life to religious service, often living in a special community called a convent. Her maternal aunt, Jeanne de Bourbon, who was already an abbess, helped guide her.

Charlotte became a nun in 1595. Later, in 1605, she followed in her aunt's footsteps and became the abbess of the convent of Jouarre de Ste. Croix in Poitiers.

Life as an Abbess

Charlotte Flandrina spent her entire life within the convent. She focused on her religious duties and on helping others through religious charity.

She kept in touch with her stepmother and her sisters by writing letters. Even though she sometimes tried to convince them to join her faith, they had a very good relationship. Her sisters, Elisabeth Flandrika and Charlotte Brabantina, even visited her at the convent sometimes.
