The Counties of Sweden (called Sveriges län in Swedish) are like special areas that help run the country. Sweden has 21 of these counties. They were first created a long time ago in 1634 by a smart leader named Count Axel Oxenstierna. Each county has its own leader, called a governor. Some people think these counties should be changed into bigger "regions" instead.

How Counties Help Run Sweden

Each county has two main groups that work together. One group is the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen). This board is led by a governor who is chosen by the Swedish government. Their job is to make sure that the government's plans and laws are followed in that county. They also help with things like environmental protection and public safety.

The other group is the Regional Council (Region). This council is made up of people elected by the citizens who live in that county. They are in charge of things like healthcare, public transport, and local development. They decide how money is spent on these services to help the people in their area.

Why Do We Have Counties?
