Coutchman (sometimes spelled Couchman) is a place in northern Freestone County, Texas, USA. It's known as a ghost town. It's about four miles southwest of Streetman. You can find it near Farm to Market Road 246.

A Look Back at Coutchman

Coutchman was started around 1850. It was named after William Coutchman, who owned land there. At its busiest, about 300 people lived in Coutchman.

The town had its own post office. This post office was open from January 1894 to February 1905. After that, mail went to the post office in Wortham.

By 1910, about 100 people lived in Coutchman. Over time, fewer and fewer people lived there. By 1980, it was no longer listed as a community. The area stopped being known as a separate town.

Famous Connections

Coutchman is most famous for one thing. It is the birthplace of a very important blues musician. This musician was named Blind Lemon Jefferson.
