Coveñas is a fun resort town and a municipality (a town with its own government). It is located in the northern Sucre Department of Colombia. Coveñas started in the 1500s as a port. Later, in the 1900s, it became an oil port. In 2002, it officially became a municipality. Today, Coveñas is a very popular vacation spot for people from the mountains of Colombia.

History of Coveñas

The area where Coveñas is located was first settled in 1560. It was used as a port for trading enslaved people. In the mid-1800s, after slavery was made illegal, it changed into a port for trading meat.

In 1971, oil was discovered in the area. Soon after, many Colombian oil companies moved in. By the late 1970s, hotels were built to encourage people to visit. Coveñas officially became its own town and municipality in 2002.

Tourism in Coveñas

Coveñas has grown a lot as a tourist spot since the 1960s. At first, it was mostly popular with people living nearby.

Since the 1970s, more people from all over Colombia started visiting. Its beautiful sea, sandy beaches, and better hotels made it a popular place. In the 21st century, the number of hotels has grown a lot. They offer modern services for visitors.
