The Covit House is a really old and special house in Goshen, New Hampshire. It was built around the year 1800. What makes it unique is its special "plank-frame" way of building. This house is one of the best examples of this building style in town. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

What Makes the Covit House Special?

The Covit House is a great example of an old building style. It is known as a "plank-frame house." This means it was built differently from most houses today.

How Was It Built?

Instead of using many thin wooden studs, like most houses today, the Covit House uses thick wooden planks. These planks are about 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide. They stand straight up to form the walls. To make the walls strong and stable, wooden pegs (called dowels) are pushed through the planks sideways. This special way of building made houses very sturdy.

Where is the Covit House Located?

The Covit House sits on the south side of Goshen Center Road. It is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of New Hampshire Route 31. The house is surrounded by 20 acres (8.1 ha) of fields and woods. There is also a small fish pond nearby.

The house itself is one and a half stories tall. It is made of wood with a gabled roof. A brick chimney stands in the center of the house. The front of the house faces west, looking out towards the pond. It has five window sections across the front. The main door is in the middle, with two windows on each side. Above the door, there is a small window with four glass panes.

A Look Back in Time

The main part of the house is about 28 feet (8.5 m) long and 24 feet (7.3 m) wide. It was built around 1800. This makes it one of the oldest houses in Goshen. It is also one of the best-preserved plank-frame houses in the area. When it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, it was in excellent condition. The Covit House helps us understand how people built homes a long time ago.
