Cowell was once a small place in California. It was not officially part of a city, but now it is a part of Concord. You can find it in Contra Costa County. Cowell is located about 259 feet (79 meters) above sea level.

What Was Cowell?

Cowell was named after a local landowner, Joshua Cowell. For many years, it was a special kind of town called a "company town." This means that a single company owned most of the homes and businesses there.

A Town Built for Cement

The company that built Cowell was called Cowell Portland Cement. They made cement, which is a key material for building roads and buildings. The town existed mainly to support the cement factory and its workers.

A post office served the people of Cowell for many years. It opened in 1922 and closed in 1969. This shows that Cowell was a busy place for a long time.

What Remains Today?

Today, almost nothing is left of the original town of Cowell. Most of it was replaced in the 1970s by a new neighborhood. This area is known as the Walnut Country subdivision, or "The Crossings."

For many years, a very tall smokestack stood as a reminder of the old cement factory. It was 244 feet high! This smokestack was a landmark for the area. However, it was taken down in 2009. Now, only an old firehouse remains from the original Cowell.
