Coxiella is a special group, or genus, of tiny living things called bacteria. These bacteria are so small you can only see them with a powerful microscope! They are known as gram-negative bacteria, which is a way scientists classify them based on their cell walls.
This group of bacteria was named after an American scientist named Harold Herald Rea Cox (1907–1986). He was a bacteriologist, which means he studied bacteria.
Right now, there's only one type of bacteria in the Coxiella group, and it's called Coxiella burnetii. This specific bacterium belongs to a larger family of bacteria known as Gammaproteobacteria.
