About Crawford Manor: A Unique Building
Crawford Manor is located near the edge of downtown New Haven. You can find it at the corner of Park Street and MLK Jr. Boulevard. The building sits on a small piece of land with green plants around the street sides. There is also parking and a driveway on the other sides.
What Does Crawford Manor Look Like?
This building is fifteen stories tall. It has an unusual C-shaped design when you look at it from above. The building is made with a strong steel frame and concrete blocks. It has a rough, textured concrete finish on the outside.
Most parts of the building go straight up from the bottom to the top. There are porches that stick out, some are round and some are square. Tall, windowless walls separate these porches and windows from each other.
Inside Crawford Manor
The inside of the building looks similar to the outside. It has rough, ribbed concrete walls and ceilings. The floors are also made of poured concrete. Today, Crawford Manor has 109 apartments. These apartments are either studio apartments or have one bedroom.
Why Was Crawford Manor Built?
Construction on Crawford Manor started in 1964. It was built to help solve a big problem: there weren't enough homes for older people who needed affordable housing.
The building was designed by Paul Rudolph. At that time, he was the head of the Yale University School of Architecture. Rudolph was famous for a style of building called "Brutalist architecture." This style often uses raw concrete and has a strong, blocky look.
The building was first planned to be thirteen stories tall in 1962. But because more people needed housing, it was made even larger. When it was finished in 1966, Crawford Manor was the biggest housing complex for seniors in New Haven. It was named after George W. Crawford, who had recently retired from working for the city.
