Creigiau railway station was a train station located in Creigiau, a village in south Wales. It was part of the Barry Railway line. This line ran between Efail Isaf and Wenvoe, passing through Creigiau. The station opened on March 16, 1896. It had two platforms where passengers could get on and off trains.
The station was used for many years, helping people travel around the area. During World War II, it played a special role. American soldiers were brought to the station to be taken to a nearby hospital called Rhydlafar. This shows how important the station was for local transport and even for supporting the war effort.
The Creigiau railway station closed its doors on September 10, 1962. Even though the station is no longer in use, you can still see parts of it today. Both of its original platforms are still there, though they are now quite overgrown with plants. The area where the station buildings and train yard once stood is now used by a company that operates coaches (buses).
The Future of the Old Line
Even though Creigiau station closed many years ago, there are plans to bring parts of the old railway line back to life. In 2019, a study was announced to look into reopening the disused rail route from Llantrisant to Cardiff, which passes through Creigiau.
This project is part of a bigger plan called the South Wales Metro. If the line reopens, it would likely use special trains called "tram-trains." These trains can run on regular railway tracks and also on tram lines. They might even be able to run on battery power, which is good for the environment. This could mean that trains might stop in Creigiau again one day!
