Crem Helado is a well-known Colombian company that makes delicious ice cream. It is owned by a larger company called Grupo Nutresa.
In 2018, Crem Helado earned about 118.4 million US dollars. They were also a big player in the Colombian ice cream market, controlling about 41.4% of it that year.
How Crem Helado Started
Crem Helado began in 1955. An American businessman named Horace Day started it. He lived in Colombia.
Horace Day first opened a small ice cream shop in Bogotá. It was on Caracas Avenue near Calle 32. He called it "Helados Chikos," but this first shop did not succeed.
In 1964, a new company was formed called Tropicrem Ltda. This company was the first to make ice cream in large factories in Colombia.
Later, in 1982, a food company named Meals S.A. bought Tropicrem Ltda. This helped the ice cream business grow even more.
Becoming Part of Grupo Nutresa
In 2003, Meals S.A. tried to expand into Panama. They joined with local business people and Nestlé's ice cream part to create "Helados Melca." However, this business did not work out well, so Meals S.A. decided to leave that market.
Then, in 2006, a very large Colombian food company, Grupo Nutresa, bought Meals S.A. This made Crem Helado a part of the big Grupo Nutresa family.
