Crem Helado is a well-known Colombian company that makes delicious ice cream. It is owned by a larger company called Grupo Nutresa. In 2018, Crem Helado made about 118.4 million US dollars. It was also the biggest ice cream seller in Colombia that year, controlling more than 40% of the market.
The Story of Crem Helado
Crem Helado was started in 1955 by an American businessman named Horace Day. He lived in Colombia and opened a small ice cream shop in Bogotá. The shop was called "Helados Chikos," but it did not do very well at first.
Growing the Ice Cream Business
Even though the first shop struggled, the idea of making ice cream grew. In 1964, a new company called Tropicrem Ltda. was created. This company began making ice cream on a larger scale for people all over Colombia.
Later, in 1982, Tropicrem Ltda. was bought by Meals S. A., which was a food company. This helped the ice cream business become even bigger.
Changes and New Owners
Meals S. A. continued to grow the ice cream brand. In 2003, Meals S. A. tried to work with another ice cream company in Panama called Helados Melca. However, this partnership did not last very long, and Meals S. A. decided to focus on other things.
A few years later, in 2006, Meals S. A. itself was bought by Grupo Nutresa. This made Crem Helado part of one of the largest food companies in Colombia. Today, Crem Helado continues to be a favorite ice cream brand for many people.
