Crestwood, Yonkers facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Crestwood is a friendly neighborhood located in Yonkers, New York. It's in the northeastern part of Yonkers and is separated from the village of Tuckahoe by the Bronx River. Many people who live in Crestwood use the Tuckahoe post office, so they sometimes say they live in Tuckahoe or Crestwood instead of Yonkers. Near the Crestwood train station, you can see many beautiful, large homes on the hills overlooking the river. The Bronx River acts like a border, dividing Yonkers from other nearby places like the Town of Eastchester, which includes Tuckahoe and Bronxville.

Getting Around: Transportation in Crestwood

The building of the Bronx River Parkway really changed the area around Crestwood and Tuckahoe. This big road project started in 1917. The people who designed the parkway wanted it to handle a lot of cars easily and also show off the beautiful scenery without harming it. The Parkway was finished in 1925 and had a big impact on how people lived and traveled.

When the parkway was built, some land in Crestwood was bought for the road, and some cross streets were split into two parts. If you drive north on the Parkway past Exit 5 for Crestwood, you can still see where the old cross-streets used to be, stretching from one side of the road to the other. A newer exit ramp now leads into what was once a road that had to be removed to make way for the parkway.

The Harlem Line of the Metro-North commuter train runs along the Bronx River. It has two stops in the Village of Tuckahoe. Since both stations couldn't be named "Tuckahoe," the station closer to the village hall is called Tuckahoe. The other station, further north, is named Crestwood because it's close to the Crestwood neighborhood in Yonkers. This very train station was even featured on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post magazine on November 16, 1946. It was in a famous painting called Commuters by the artist Norman Rockwell.

Learning and Faith: Schools and Churches

Since 1962, Crestwood has been home to Saint Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. This seminary bought the old estate of Adrian Iselin from the Sisters of Charity and moved its classes and offices here from Manhattan.

Crestwood is also where you'll find the Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation. This church has its own school, the Annunciation Elementary School. It's a Catholic elementary school that teaches students from pre-school all the way up to eighth grade.

Another school in the neighborhood is Paideia School 15, which is part of the Yonkers Public Schools system.
