The Crișul Negru (which means Black Criș) is a river in Europe. It flows through two countries: Romania and Hungary. The river starts high up in the western Apuseni Mountains.

As it flows through Romania, it passes by towns like Ștei and Beiuș. When it crosses into Hungary, its name changes to Fekete-Körös. A few kilometers north of Gyula, it joins another river called the Fehér-Körös. Together, they form the larger Körös river.

In Romania, the Crișul Negru is about 164 kilometers (102 miles) long. The area of land that drains water into this river, called its basin, is about 3,820 square kilometers (1,470 sq mi). Some water from the Crișul Repede river is even sent to the Crișul Negru through a special channel called the Criș Collector Canal.

What's in a Name? The Crișul Negru

The name Crișul Negru has an interesting history. It comes from an old language called Dacian. In Dacian, the word Krísos meant "black."

So, the river's name literally means "Black Criș." The Romanian word negru also means "black." This shows how the name has kept its meaning over a very long time. Sometimes, the upper part of the river is called Crișul Poienii. This is before it meets the Crișul Băița river.
