Where the Körös River Starts
The Körös river actually begins as three different rivers. These are the Crișul Alb (also called Fehér-Körös), the Crișul Negru (Fekete-Körös), and the Crișul Repede (Sebes-Körös). All three of these rivers start in the Apuseni Mountains in Transylvania, Romania.
How the Körös River Forms
- The Fehér-Körös and Fekete-Körös rivers join together. This happens near the town of Gyula in Hungary.
- After these two rivers meet, the main river is sometimes called the Kettős-Körös. This means "double Körös" in Hungarian.
- Further downstream, about 37.3 kilometers (23 miles) later, another river joins in. This is the Sebes-Körös river. It flows into the Körös near Gyomaendrőd.
- Once all three main rivers have joined, the section of the river is called the Hármas-Körös. This means "triple Körös" in Hungarian.
Where the Körös River Ends
The Körös river eventually flows into the Tisza River. This happens near the town of Csongrád in Hungary. The Tisza River is one of the biggest rivers in Central Europe.
Ancient Names for the Körös
Long ago, people knew this river by different names. In ancient times, it was called "Chrysus," Crisus, Crisia, Grisia, or Gerasus.
