What Does It Look Like?

This small dragonfly looks quite different depending on if it's a male or a female.

Male Crimson Marsh Glider

Male crimson marsh gliders have a reddish-brown face. Their eyes are crimson (a deep red) on top and brown on the sides. Their body part behind the head, called the thorax, is red. It often has a fine, purple, powdery coating.

The main body section, called the abdomen, is crimson with a hint of violet. The base of the abdomen is a bit wider. Their wings are clear, but the veins inside them are crimson. Near the base of the wings, there's a wide amber (yellow-orange) patch. The small spots on their wings are dark reddish-brown, and their legs are black.

Female Crimson Marsh Glider

Female crimson marsh gliders have a face that is olive green or bright reddish-brown. Their eyes are purplish-brown on top and grey underneath. The thorax is olive green with brown stripes down the middle and black stripes on the sides.

Their abdomen is reddish-brown. It has black markings in the middle and on the sides. These black markings join together at the end of each body segment. They surround a reddish-brown spot. The female's wings are clear with brown tips. The wing veins are bright yellow to brown, and any amber markings at the base are very light. The wing spots are dark brown, and their legs are dark grey with thin yellow stripes.

Where Do They Live?

You can often find crimson marsh gliders in places with lots of water plants. They like weedy ponds and tanks, marshy areas, and channels. They also live near slow-moving streams and rivers in lowlands and mid-hill regions. They lay their eggs and grow up in streams, rivers, canals, ponds, and tanks.
