Cristina Iovu's Weightlifting Journey
Cristina Iovu started her career with great success. In 2012, she won a gold medal. This was at the 2012 European Weightlifting Championships. Later that year, she competed in the London Olympics. She originally earned a bronze medal in the 53 kg weight class.
Competing for Different Countries
Over her career, Cristina Iovu has represented three different countries. She started with Moldova. Later, she competed for Azerbaijan. In 2016, she represented Romania. She won another gold medal for Romania. This was at the 2016 European Weightlifting Championships.
Challenges and Fair Play in Sport
Sports have strict rules to ensure fair play. Athletes must follow these rules. Sometimes, athletes are found to have used substances that are not allowed. These are called prohibited substances.
In 2013, Cristina Iovu was disqualified. This happened at the 2013 World Weightlifting Championships. She was found to have a prohibited substance in her system. Because of this, she was not allowed to compete for two years. The team she was with also had to pay a large fine.
Later, in 2016, her sample from the 2012 London Olympics was re-tested. It was found to contain another prohibited substance. As a result, she lost her bronze medal from those Olympics. She was also not able to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Recent Competitions and Bans
In November 2018, Cristina Iovu competed again. She won a bronze medal at the 2018 World Weightlifting Championships. However, in December 2018, she faced another ban. She was found to have used a method called "blood substitution." This is also against the rules of fair play in sports. Because of this, she is not allowed to compete until 2026.
