Cristina Pereyra facts for kids
María Cristina Pereyra (born in 1964) is a super smart Venezuelan mathematician! She teaches math and statistics at the University of New Mexico in the United States. She has also written several books about special math topics called wavelets and harmonic analysis. From 2019 to 2021, she was an important member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) Council.
Becoming a Math Whiz
María Cristina Pereyra showed her math skills early on. She was part of the Venezuelan team for the International Mathematical Olympiad in both 1981 and 1982. This is a big competition for young math students from all over the world!
She earned her first math degree, called a licenciado, in 1986 from the Central University of Venezuela. After that, she went to Yale University for more advanced studies. She worked really hard and earned her Ph.D. in 1993. Her special research for her Ph.D. was about "Sobolev Spaces On Lipschitz Curves." Her professor, Peter Jones, helped guide her work.
Teaching and Writing Math Books
After finishing her Ph.D., María Cristina Pereyra taught at Princeton University for three years. Then, in 1996, she joined the math team at the University of New Mexico, where she still teaches today.
She loves to share her knowledge! She has written or helped edit several books about math, especially about wavelets and harmonic analysis. These are advanced areas of math that help us understand things like signals and patterns.
Here are some of the books she has worked on:
- Lecture Notes on Dyadic Harmonic Analysis (published in 2001)
- Wavelets, Their Friends, and What They Can Do For You (with Martin Mohlenkamp, published in 2008)
- Harmonic Analysis: from Fourier to Wavelets (with Lesley Ward, published in 2012)
- Harmonic Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, Complex Analysis, Banach Spaces, and Operator Theory: Celebrating Cora Sadosky's Life, Volumes I and II (she helped edit these books in 2016 and 2017)
