Croton setiger is a type of plant often called turkey mullein or dove weed. You can find it growing naturally in most of the western United States and northwest Mexico. It has also started growing in other places, like parts of Australia. Sometimes, its name is spelled Croton setigerus, and it used to be known as Eremocarpus setigerus.

This plant is usually short and wide. Its leaves are shaped like hexagons and feel furry, almost like felt. They are a pale pink-green color. The plant also has small green flowers that are covered in soft bristles.

What is Turkey Mullein Used For?

Croton setigerus is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant. This means people grow it because it looks nice. Its low, rounded shape can fill a plant pot well.

Plant Safety and Wildlife

Even though the plant looks harmless, its leaves can be harmful to some animals if they eat them. Long ago, Native Americans found a clever use for this plant. They would crush the plants and put them into water. This made fish become dizzy, which made them much easier to catch.

When you crush the leaves, they give off a sweet smell. Some people find this smell a bit strong or unpleasant.

Despite the plant being harmful to some animals, its seeds are a favorite food for many birds. This is why the plant is called "turkey mullein" and "dove weed." Doves and wild turkeys especially love to eat the seeds.
