The Crows Nest is a historic farm in Wilmington, Vermont. It's a large property, about 75 acres, with forests and a field for hay. You'll also find some old farm buildings near the main house. The main house was built around 1803 and is in the Cape style. This property shows what early farms in Vermont were like. Today, it is protected to keep its history safe. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
Exploring Crows Nest Farm
The Crows Nest is located on the west side of Sturgis Drive in Wilmington. This road used to be part of Coldbrook Road, which was the main way to get to the northwest part of the village. The farm was once much bigger, about 100 acres. Some of that land was sold for new buildings.
The farm now has 75 acres. Most of this land has grown back into woodland. There's also a rectangular field for hay above the main farm buildings. Today, the farm has the original farmhouse and a newer barn.
What Does the Farmhouse Look Like?
The farmhouse is a simple, one-and-a-half story building. It's made of wood and has a roof that slopes down on two sides. The house has a chimney in the middle and wooden siding. Its foundation is made of stone and some natural rock.
A smaller section of the house extends from the back. There's also a window section on the back roof. Inside, you'll find a mix of old and new materials. This is because the house was restored in 1925. Some original parts, like wide pine floors and an old fireplace, are still there.
A Look Back in Time
Perley Barlett bought the 100-acre property in 1801. People believe he built the house because the land was empty before he owned it. Also, old records talk about a farm being on the land later. The way the house was built and its style match buildings from the early 1800s.
Different owners used the property as a farm until 1925. Then, it became a vacation home. At that time, there were two old barns from the 1800s across Sturgis Drive. These barns were still standing when the property was listed in 1998, but they have since been taken down. Kate Sturgis, who changed the farm into a vacation home, sold some land to the town for a new road. She also sold other parts of the land for new houses to be built.
