Cruso (also spelled Crusoe) is a small, quiet place in Haywood County, North Carolina, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes and businesses that are part of the larger county, but they do not have their own separate local government like a city or town.
Cruso is located near the beautiful Pisgah National Forest. This forest is a huge area of mountains, trees, and rivers. It is a popular spot for hiking, camping, and enjoying nature.
A Bit of History
The name Cruso has an interesting story. When the community first got its own post office, the first postmaster named it. He had just finished reading a famous book called Robinson Crusoe. This book was written by an English writer named Daniel Defoe.
Recent Events
On August 17, 2021, Cruso experienced a serious event. Heavy flooding happened because of Tropical Storm Fred. This storm brought a lot of rain to the area. The flooding caused a lot of damage. Even in June 2022, many months later, there were still large piles of debris (like broken trees and other materials) in and around Cruso from the flood.
