The War Cross (Spanish: Cruz de Guerra) is a very important military award in Spain. It is given to soldiers who show great bravery in battle. This special medal honors those who perform amazing actions or provide excellent service. It recognizes their courage during long periods of fighting or military missions. It also celebrates their strong military skills and leadership.
What is the War Cross?
The War Cross is a military decoration given to members of the Spanish armed forces. It is one of Spain's highest awards for bravery. The medal celebrates soldiers who go above and beyond in dangerous situations. It shows how much their country values their courage and dedication.
History of the War Cross
The War Cross was first created in 1938. When it was first made, there were four different types of the medal. Each type was for a different rank of military personnel:
- Gran Cruz (Grand Cross)
- Cruz de Guerra para Jefes (War Cross for Chiefs/Commanders)
- Cruz de Guerra para oficiales y suboficiales (War Cross for Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers)
- Cruz de Guerra para Cabos y Soldados (War Cross for Corporals and Soldiers)
Over time, the rules for the War Cross changed. In 2003, a new law simplified the award. It reduced the four types to just one: the Cruz (Cross). This new law also brought in a new design for the medal.
