Cuba Cola is a popular cola-flavored soft drink that comes from Sweden. It's made by a company called Spendrups. This fizzy drink has a special place in Swedish history because it was one of the very first cola drinks available there. It even came out a few months before the famous Coca-Cola arrived in Sweden!
The Story of Cuba Cola
How it Started
Cola drinks weren't always allowed in Sweden. But in the summer of 1953, the rules changed, and suddenly, people could enjoy these sweet, bubbly drinks. Cuba Cola was quick to appear on the market that very summer. It was actually launched three months before Coca-Cola made its debut in Sweden.
The original recipe for Cuba Cola was owned by a company called Saturnus AB, located in Malmö, Sweden. Several other breweries, like Vasa bryggeri, Hammars bryggeri, Heines bryggeri, Guttsta Källa, and Krönleins, were given permission to make it.
Why the Name "Cuba Cola"?
You might wonder why it's called "Cuba Cola." It's quite simple! In the 1950s, the country of Cuba was seen as a very exciting and exotic place. So, the name "Cuba Cola" was chosen just because it sounded cool and adventurous at the time.
Modern Changes
In 2020, Cuba Cola got a fresh new look and an updated recipe. The bottles were redesigned with a cool retro style, bringing back some of the old charm. This change was introduced by Spendrups, the company that now manufactures the drink.
