Cucurbita sororia is a type of plant in the Cucurbita family. You might know other plants from this family, like pumpkins and squashes! Sometimes, Cucurbita sororia is thought of as a special kind of Cucurbita argyrosperma.
This plant grows naturally from northern Mexico all the way down to Nicaragua. It is mostly found along the Pacific coast in these areas. Scientists once thought Cucurbita sororia was closely related to another plant called Cucurbita texana. However, they later found out that Cucurbita sororia is actually an ancestor of Cucurbita argyrosperma. This means Cucurbita argyrosperma likely came from Cucurbita sororia a long time ago! These two plants can even mix together and create new plants.
Discovering Cucurbita sororia
A scientist named Liberty Hyde Bailey officially described this plant species in 1943. He wrote about it in a scientific book called Gentes Herbarum. This was an important step in understanding and naming plants.
