Cuevas Las Cabachuelas (which means Cabachuelas Caves) is a huge cave system in Puerto Rico. You can find it between the towns of Morovis and Ciales. These caves are part of the Cabachuelas Natural Reserve, which was created in 2012.

This cave system is super important for Puerto Rico. It has special natural features, a rich cultural history, and amazing archaeological finds. It also plays a big role in the area's water systems and how the land was formed. If you want to explore, guided tours are available through the Diógenes Colón Gómez Cultural Center in Morovis.

The Story of the Caves

The Cabachuelas caves are located in the Barahona area of Morovis. Two people, Roberto Martínez and Ovidio Dávila, have studied these caves very carefully. Martínez worked hard to get the cave system recognized as a national park.

There are about 60 caves in the Cabachuelas area! This whole zone was officially made a natural reserve on February 29, 2012. This happened when Governor Luis Fortuño signed Law 129. After that, officials started figuring out which pieces of land around the caves needed to be bought from private owners. They found 16 private properties that should become part of the reserve.

In February 2019, the park finally opened its doors to the public. If you want to visit, guided tours for groups of up to 15 people are set up by CABACOOP, which is the Proyecto Cabachuelas team.

What's Next for the Caves?

The tourism group Discover Puerto Rico has been helping to promote the caves in Morovis. This helps more people learn about this amazing place.

There are still 75 acres of land that need to be bought for the park. Once the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) buys this land, the park will be fully established. It will then be known as Parque Nacional Las Cabachuelas, which means Las Cabachuelas National Park.
