Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Culann was a famous smith in ancient Ireland, known from the stories of the Ulster Cycle. He was a very important person, and his home was guarded by a huge, fierce watchdog. This dog was special; it was one of three pups found in the skull of a giant. Culann's dog had a speckled coat, making it unique.

Who Was Culann?

Culann was a skilled craftsman. He worked with metal, creating tools, weapons, and other important items for kings and warriors. In the tales of the Ulster Cycle, smiths like Culann were highly respected. They were seen as powerful figures because of their ability to shape metal.

The Feast Invitation

One day, Culann decided to host a big feast at his house. He invited Conchobar mac Nessa, who was the king of Ulster, and all of his important followers. On the way to the feast, King Conchobar saw a young boy named Sétanta playing hurling. Sétanta was amazing at the game, showing incredible skill and strength.

Conchobar was so impressed that he invited Sétanta to join them at the feast. Sétanta thanked the king but said he would come later. He wanted to finish his game first. He promised to catch up with them once the game was over.

A Fierce Watchdog

The feast began, and everyone was having a good time. Culann asked King Conchobar if he was expecting anyone else. King Conchobar had completely forgotten about Sétanta! He told Culann that everyone who was invited had arrived.

Because no one else was expected, Culann let his giant watchdog loose. The dog was meant to guard the house and keep everyone safe. It was very loyal and very protective.

Sétanta's New Name

Soon after, Sétanta arrived at Culann's house. He walked right into the path of the unleashed watchdog. The dog, not knowing Sétanta was an invited guest, attacked him fiercely. Sétanta, being a strong and brave young hero, had to defend himself. In the struggle, the powerful watchdog was killed.

Sétanta felt terrible about what had happened. He knew how important the dog was to Culann. To make up for it, Sétanta offered to take the dog's place. He promised to guard Culann's house until a new watchdog could be trained. Because of this brave and honorable act, Sétanta was given a new name: Cú Chulainn. This name means "Culann's hound." It was a name that honored his bravery and his promise.
