The Story of Culler Lake
How the Lake Got Its Name
Culler Lake wasn't always called that! When it was first created in 1938, it was known as Kidwiler. Just two years later, in 1940, the lake was renamed Culler Lake. This was done to honor Mayor Lloyd Culler, who was an important leader in Frederick.
Why Culler Lake Was Built
This lake is not natural; it was built by people. Its main job is to be part of a system that manages stormwater. This means it collects rainwater, which helps protect downtown Frederick, Maryland, from flooding. It's a very important part of keeping the city safe.
Restoring the Lake in 2016
Over time, lakes can collect dirt and debris. In 2016, Culler Lake got a major cleanup. This process is called dredging. During the dredging, about 500 dump trucks full of mud and other materials were removed from the lake. This helped make the lake healthier and cleaner.
Fun Activities at Culler Lake
Today, Culler Lake is a lively place for the community. The city makes sure to add fish to the lake regularly, which means it's a great spot for fishing. Many festivals and events are also held there, making it a central gathering place for everyone in Frederick.
