The Oliver Culver House is a really old and important house in Rochester, New York. It's the oldest home still standing in the city! Because it's so special, it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's recognized as a significant historical site in the USA.

Who Was Oliver Culver?

Oliver Culver was born in 1778 in a state called Connecticut. He came to Rochester, New York when it was just starting out. Oliver was a very busy and important person in Rochester's early days. He did many different jobs!

Oliver's Contributions to Rochester

Oliver Culver was a pioneer (an early settler) who helped build Rochester. He worked as a surveyor, which means he measured land. He also helped build roads and traded furs. He even built some of the first boats for canals and shipping! These boats helped connect Rochester to the Great Lakes.

Oliver also helped start St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He laid out East Avenue, which is a main street in Rochester's historic area. He even helped build an early log-school house. Later in his life, he served in the state government, helping to make laws for New York.

Building the House

Oliver Culver built his famous house in 1805. It started as a smaller house. Then, in 1816, a new, bigger part was built in front of it. This is mostly the house we see today.

The house was once used as a tavern, which was like an inn or a restaurant. It had a front door for men and a separate side door for women. On the second floor, there's a special ballroom. It has a curved ceiling, like the bottom of a ship! The floor was also designed to be springy, which was great for dancing. People have called the Oliver Culver House "one of the most charming houses" in the Genesee Valley.

Moving the House

In 1906, Oliver Culver's granddaughter, Caroline Culver, owned the house. She and her husband moved the house about 1,000 feet down East Avenue to where it stands today. During the move, the oldest part of the house was damaged. It was later fixed and made bigger to become the house's library.

The house is a great example of Federal architecture. This style was popular in America around the early 1800s. It features simple, balanced designs with straight lines and a sense of calm.

Later Owners and Preservation

For many years, from 1816 to 1945, three generations of the Culver family lived in the house. In 1945, a woman named Elizabeth Gibson Holahan bought the house. She was very important in saving and restoring historical buildings.

Elizabeth Holahan led many efforts to protect old buildings. She was president of the Landmark Society of Western New York and the Rochester Historical Society. She helped restore several historic homes, including a Revolutionary War general's mansion and the oldest house in Monroe County. She even helped move and restore George Eastman's childhood home!
