History of the Cumaná Cathedral

Building the Cathedral

The Cumaná Cathedral started being built a long time ago. Construction began in the 1700s. Back then, it was known by the name Seo Cordis Iesu. This means "Sacred Heart of Jesus" in Latin.

Earthquake and Restoration

In 1929, a big earthquake hit the area. This earthquake caused a lot of damage to the cathedral. Parts of the building were destroyed. But don't worry, the cathedral was fixed! It was restored and rebuilt in 1936.

Monsignor Breckman was important in its restoration. He even brought the wood for the cathedral from the mountains of Cariaco. He also helped design how it would look after the repairs.

What is a Cathedral?

A cathedral is a special church. It is the main church for a diocese or archdiocese. A diocese is like a church district. The Cumaná Cathedral is the main church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cumaná. This means it's where the Archbishop of Cumaná has his official seat.

When it Became an Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Cumaná was officially created on May 16, 1992. This happened because of a special document from Pope John Paul II. This document is called a "bull." The bull was named necessitate adducti.

The idea for this church area goes back even further. In 1519, there was a plan for a diocese in Paria. This was also based in Cumaná.
