What Was Cumnock and Doon Valley?
Cumnock and Doon Valley was a type of local government area. It was set up to help manage public services for people living there. Think of it like a local council that looks after things in your town or area.
How it Started
This district was created in 1975. A new law called the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 made big changes. It set up a two-part system for local government in Scotland. There were larger "regions" and smaller "districts" within them. Cumnock and Doon Valley was one of the districts in the Strathclyde region.
The new district took over areas from older ones. It covered all of two previous areas and most of a third. These old areas were:
- Cumnock and Holmhead Burgh
- Cumnock District
- Most of Dalmellington District (but not Coylton)
When it Ended
Cumnock and Doon Valley stopped being a district in 1996. Another new law, the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, changed things again. It replaced the regions and districts with new, larger areas called "unitary council areas."
The area of Cumnock and Doon Valley joined with Kilmarnock and Loudoun. Together, they formed the new East Ayrshire council area.
Who Was in Charge?
The first election for the district council happened in 1974. The council officially started its work on May 16, 1975. For its entire existence, the Labour Party had the most seats on the council. This meant they were in control of how the district was run.

Where Was the Main Office?
The main office for the Cumnock and Doon Valley District Council was in Lugar. This town is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-east of Cumnock, which was the biggest town in the area.
The council's offices were in a building that used to be the Lugar Ironworks. Before the council moved in, it was used by the National Coal Board for their offices and workshops. After the district was closed down in 1996, the building in Lugar was used as a smaller office for East Ayrshire Council. It was eventually taken down around 2013.
