Cureña was officially created on October 6, 1999. This happened through a special government decision.

Cureña is located in the northern part of Costa Rica. It shares borders with other places. To the south, it borders La Virgen. To the east, it borders Puerto Viejo. The province of Alajuela is to its west. To the north, Cureña borders the country of Nicaragua.

Cureña covers an area of about 369 square kilometers. It is located about 30 meters above sea level. This makes it the fourth largest district in its canton.
