Currie's History
Currie was officially started in 1888, but people lived there even before that time. The community got its name from John H. Currie, who used to be in charge of railroads in the area.
Currie is famous for being the location of North Carolina's very first battle in the American Revolutionary War. This important fight, called the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge, happened in 1776. It took place close to the land owned by a local resident named Elizabeth Moore. Later, in 1864, Elizabeth Moore's family built the historic Bell House, which is still a well-known building in the community today.
Currie is also home to Canetuck School. This school is the only place in town that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), which means it's a very important historical site.
