Currier Island facts for kids
Currier Island is the name of a fictional (not real) country. It's used by a special team that plays a sport called ultimate frisbee.
This team, representing "Currier Island," has played in every World Beach Ultimate tournament since 2004. These tournaments are big international competitions for ultimate frisbee played on the beach.
What is Currier Island?
Currier Island is not a real country. It's a fun idea used by a group of ultimate frisbee players. They come together to form a team and compete in major tournaments.
Currier Island at Tournaments
The "Currier Island" team has been a regular participant in the World Beach Ultimate tournaments. They have competed against teams from real countries around the world.
In 2015, at the World Beach Ultimate tournament (WCBU2015) held in Dubai, Currier Island sent five different teams. These teams competed in various categories, including:
- Mixed teams (boys and girls playing together)
- Masters Open (older male players)
- Masters Mixed (older mixed-gender players)
- Masters Women (older female players)
- Grand Masters (even older players)
Special Rules for Currier Island
Because Currier Island is not a real country, there are special rules for its teams in tournaments. While they can compete and play in the early rounds, they are not allowed to advance to the "knockout stages." The knockout stages are the final rounds where teams are eliminated until a champion is found.
This rule was first put into action in 2015 during the Dubai tournament. A team from Currier Island played exceptionally well and earned a spot in the knockout bracket. However, due to the rule, they could not move forward in the competition.
